Samplers are a great way to experiment with color without having to invest in a huge pile of fiber. Each color in the sampler has a light and dark counterpart and each will shade into the next color in the spectrum.  This roving is easy to spin and felts well.

  PAINTED ROVING

Keeping the roving soft and easy to draft while dyeing and rinsing is a challenge so I keep post-dye rinsing to a minimum.  Don't be alarmed if you have some color in your first rinse.

wool is a medium grade cross bred wool blended with 15% mohair that spins a soft squishy yarn and felts fast and firmly.

Painted locks are a nice way to add texture to yarn.  Separate  individual locks, trease them  open and lay them on the surface of the roving as it is being drafted. The coarser texture of the lincoln will rise to the surface of the yarn. If you hold the lock crossways to the roving being drafted you can get the locks to be drawn into the yarn in swirls and curls.

Painted roving is fun for its unpredictability and constantly changing shades as one color fades into the next. The plying technique you choose gives you a degree of control over the way the colors move along the finished yarn.  Split the roving down the nmiddle and play each spun half backl to itself for colors that sort of stay together.  Spinning from a center pull ball gives you maximum color crossing. Navajo plying lets you keep each color separate and true to the color sequence of the roving.
